Michael recently graduated from York St John University with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art and is currently based in Leeds to continue his studies at Master’s level. Primarily working as a painter, Michael’s portraits contain meticulous detail and pay close attention to the true character of his subjects.

Dedicated to the significance of everyday engagements with animals, with an unashamed bias for our feline friends, Michael's scenographic 'sculptural paintings' capture heartfelt moments and celebrate the individuality of each subject. A relatively new development in Michael’s practice, his process involves hand-cutting the shape of the subject into MDF boards, and bringing them to life with his delicate application of oil paints.

Working with the desire to simulate the joys of being surrounded by animal companions, Michael’s venture into combining woodworks with his painting practice exploded into a rush of creativity and resulted in the playful interventions which he makes today.

Companionship lies at the centre of Michael’s practice, something which is best conveyed in his new series ‘Misty. The work depicts the deeply personal connection Michael holds with the titular subject. Combining the loving desire to archive and capture precious memories of his beloved pet along with biographical elements, this project was a turning point in Michael’s artistic practice.

Transforming memories and images of Misty, Michael’s paintings interact which one another and the spaces they are placed within, echoing the comfort brought about by a pet’s presence throughout day-to-day life. Each painting presents Misty as she has been at one time or another, capturing her essence as well as the adulation felt by the artist from the moment Misty stuck the pose, to the moment each painting was completed.

This series encapsulates the love felt for a pet, and the secret wish to be able to clone one’s furry friend.
