ChillChillCats Craftroom is proud to present Prowling in the City, a new exhibition by Sheffield-based artist Susan Chisholm. Known for her beautifully composed paintings, Susan combines meticulous depictions of wildlife sourced from forgotten nature books with bold abstract shapes and layered textures, drawing inspiration from both nature and the built environment. Her process involves building up many layers of collage and paint, applied in varied ways to create artworks with remarkable depth. Influences from the city are embedded in her work — graffiti, flaking paint, and faded wall signs — textures that mirror the complex ways urban spaces hold traces of time. Alongside this, her fascination with wildlife, sparked by her children, brings a sense of vitality and quiet resilience to each piece.
This new series has a deeply personal origin. This summer, Susan has collaborated with her six-year-old son on a creative project to raise funds for the Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. The idea grew from a life-changing experience: in September 2024, her son spent a week in hospital after being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. Together, they designed and painted cat-themed paintings, later transforming the artwork into greeting cards to sell in gratitude for the exceptional care they received. That project became the seed for Prowling in the City — an exploration of how nature prowls within the textures and structures of the urban landscape.
Susan studied Visual Communication at Edinburgh College of Art and has exhibited widely across Sheffield and surrounding areas. Prowling in the City marks a vibrant new chapter in her practice, combining heartfelt inspiration with her signature attention to detail and layered composition.
All artworks in the exhibition will be available for purchase, alongside a selection of related greeting cards and stickers featuring designs from the series.
